To innovate and improve the quality of education and scientific research

en.qdnd.vn: On the occasion of 66th anniversary of Vietnam Military Medical University (VMMU) (10 March 1949 – 10 March 2015), the VMMU was honored to receive the 3rd title: “Hero of the People's Armed Forces” for the outstanding achievements during the resistance war against France. The former victory is the driving force that the VMMU will continue to innovate and improve the quality of education, scientific research and treatment; to develop firmly, meriting the national focused university of our Army.

In the Resistance War against France, due to the demand of officers and medical personnel serving the battlefields, the VMMU was founded and started the first Course on 10th March, 1949. Lieutenant General, A/Prof. Dr. Nguyen Trong Chinh, VMMU Party Secretary and Political Commissar said: “with only 20 officers, teachers, staff  in those early days, and in the condition of rigor, fierce and deprived wartime, the VMMU successfully finished training for the first 4 classes consisting of nearly 400 members”. Officers, teachers and students directly involved in combating service, health care for the troops on the battlefield, gaining victory and opening the glorious history of the university. Only one year after its’ establishment, nearly 120 teachers and students were sent to the Border Mission (1950), served in the Bridge 308 and other main units of the Northern united areas. Next, our teachers and students have also promptly joined in the mission: Trung Du, Hoang Hoa Tham, Tay Bac. In the strategic offensive called Dong Xuan 1953-1954, especially the Battle of Dien Bien Phu, the university has mobilized hundreds of teachers and students to serve in the brigades 308, 312, 316, 351, 6 medical teams of the Medical Corp, patient-transferring stations, and wounded soldier-received stations.

In the rigor, fierce war-time, officers, teachers and students of the VMMU have demonstrated selfless spirit for wounded and sick soldiers. This force has given emergency aid and treatment, regained life, rehabilitated, recovered combativeness for thousands of wounded and sick soldiers, contributing to the historic victory of the Battle of Dien Bien Phu.

After ending the campaign, 6 comrades were awarded medals of all kinds; eight comrades was awarded the title : “emulating soldier”; and nearly 100 comrades were awarded certificates of merit.

Comrade Nguyen Ngoc Tinh, the students of the 3rd class, heroically sacrificed while being on the duty of giving emergency aid to wounded soldiers, leaving a shining example for following generations.

Also during this period, as some practical issues posed the change of training and treating missions, our teachers and students actively researched on some common and necessary disease patterns, and concentrated on the program essential to combating service. The VMMU has focused on researching and using local pharmaceutical resources, closely combined modern medicine and traditional medicine, found herbal medicine for infectious wound. Also the VMMU has established new surgical treatment of some diseases and complex wounds, anti-shock techniques, anti-infection methods, contributing to ensuring better training mission, treatment and health care for the troops.

The achievements, training and scientific research experiences of the VMMU in the Resistance War against France have opened up the front page of fascinating history, leaving a lot of experience and inspiring the next generation of the VMMU to learn, to follow and to set up many new victories and achievements.

Until now, after 66 years of its establishment and development, the VMMU has trained nearly 90,000 officers, medical personnel, including more than 800 PhD students, 8,000 masters, specialists I, II and resident doctors. The VMMU also completed more than 900 scientific projects and nearly 200 initiatives and technical innovations from the basic to the national level. The VMMU ‘s health-care centers have examined more than 220,000 visitors, 30,000 in-patients each year and successfully applied more advanced techniques, modern technologies into treatment such as: kidney, liver and heart transplantation, extracorporeal lithotripsy, in vitro fertilization, cell biomass, stem cell culture, etc.

Most recently, on March 1st, 2014, the VMMU has successfully implemented multi-organ transplantation (pancreas-kidney) for the first case in Vietnam from a dead-brain donor.

Lieutenant General, Assoc Prof. Dr. Nguyen Trong Chinh claimed: “the tradition of  those first days of the establishment has been always creating new incentives to staff, faculties, and students to build a comprehensively developed university.”

The VMMU will focus on investing in deep development, continue to innovate and improve the quality of training, research and application of new technologies and cutting-edge techniques, the quality of diagnosis and treatment, so that the university will always be worth being a prestigious center of training, scientific research, modern treatment in both domestic and international level. Along with promoting the implementation of the breakthrough, creating strong changes, synchronizing the work items and building formal, modern, comprehensively strong organization, the Party Committee and Board of Directors of the VMMU are always trying to build, strengthen solidarity and unity, promoting democracy and brainpower of the collective and the individuals in the fields of education, training, scientific research, to successfully implement all assigned tasks.

Currently, the VMMU is encouraging and promoting the role and responsibility of everyone to participate and contribute to the successful organization of Party congresses at all levels, creating a new development in the coming years.
