2. Duties and functions
* Treatment tasks:
– conducting emergency collections and providing treatment concerning thoracic surgery for military personnel, civilians, and patients under the Health Policy and Insurance.
– carrying out medical examination and outpatient treatment consultation for military personnel, civilians, and patients under the Health Policy and Insurance.
– carrying out thoracic health examination and consultation for in-line military units, unit partners as well as organizations and agencies that require medical services from Military Hospital 103.
– actively developing and deploying new techniques in thoracic surgery, and providing professional support to a number of hospitals at the Military Region and Corps levels.
– strictly implementing 44 hospital professional regimes and resolutions to preserve medical ethics for prevention of treatment issues; building and maintaining a culture of conduct within the unit.
– performing other treatment tasks as assigned by Military Hospital 103 and Vietnam Military Medical University.
* Training tasks:
– Provision of training in accordance with the University’s program for students majoring in long-term military medicine, civilian medicine, preliminary specialties as well as general surgery at first and second stages. Post-graduate and residency courses are also included.
– Provision of training in thoracic surgery for members of Field Hospitals 2.2 and 2.4
– Provision of training for foreign students studying at Military Hospital 103 (those from Laos, Cambodia, Singapore and other countries)
– Provision of in-service training for military personnel and employees (doctors and nurses).
– Perform other training tasks as assigned by Military Hospital 103 and Vietnam Military Medical University.

3. Key techniques
* Thoracoscopic surgery: lung lobectomy to treat tumors, lung cancer, localized bronchiectasis and lung abscess; mediastinal tumor resection; thymectomy to treat myasthenia gravis; lung volume reduction to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; resection of balloons, bullae, and atypical pneumonectomy to treat spontaneous pneumothorax; lung peeling to treat pleural effusion; hemostasis and pleural clotting in the treatment of chest trauma.

• Tracheoplasty surgery to treat tumors and scars of tracheal stenosis

• Rib and sternum fusion surgery to treat blunt chest trauma.

• Sternum lift surgery to treat congenital pectus excavatum.

• Surgery to treat thyroid and breast diseases: breast cancer, benign breast tumors, breast abscess, simple goiter, toxic goiter and thyroid cancer, among others.
