2. Unit traditions:
On June 2, 1962, based on the departments of Epidemiology, Hygiene, Microbiology and Parasitology, the Military Medical Research Institute (the predecessor of today’s Military Medical Academy) decided to reorganize into two Departments: Department of Epidemiology – Microbiology and Department of Hygiene. The Head of the Department of Epidemiology and Microbiology is Associate Doctor Nguyen Tang Am.
In 1966, the Military Medical Research Institute transformed into the Military Medical University (the predecessor of today’s VMMU). In 1967, the Military Medical University decided to separate the Department of Epidemiology and Microbiology into 3 departments: Department of Epidemiology, Department of Microbiology and Department of Parasitology. The Head of the Department of Epidemiology is Major/Doctor Nguyen Ai Phuong (Deputy Doctor Nguyen Tang Am was then Vice Principal of Military Medical University).
On that basis, June 2, 1962 was the founding day of the Department of Epidemiology – Microbiology, and became the annual traditional day of the Department of Military Epidemiology – VMMU.
Dean of the Faculty through periods:
– From 1962 – 1967: Associate Doctor Nguyen Tang Am served as Dean of the Faculty (PhD in 1960; Professor in 1980. From 1976, he moved out and was Deputy Minister of Health).
– From 1967 – 1975: Doctor Nguyen Ai Phuong was Head of the Department (Associate Professor in 1980; Professor in 1992. From March 1975, he moved out and worked at the Central Highlands Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology).
– From 1975 – 1988: Associate Professor, Doctor Pham Van Long served as Head of the Department (Associate Professor in 1984).
– From 1988 – 1992: Associate Professor, Dr. Phung Kim Bang was Head of the Department (PhD in 1988; Associate Professor in 1991).
– From 1992 – 1998: Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Ngoc Dinh served as Head of the Department (PhD in 1981; Associate Professor in 1996; Professor in 2009. From 1998, he moved to the Military Medical Department, then moved out and became a Deputy Director of the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology).
– From 1998 – 2008: Associate Professor, Doctor Doan Huy Hau served as Head of the Department (PhD in 1988; Associate Professor in 2002).
– From 2008 – 2011: Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Xuan Vinh served as Head of the Department (PhD in 1992; Associate Professor in 2009).
– From August 2011 to present: Associate Professor, Dr. Dinh Hong Duong is Head of the Department (PhD in 2007; Associate Professor in 2015).
Since 2017, the Ministry of National Defense decided to change the name of the Department of Military Epidemiology to the Faculty of Military Epidemiology.
3. Functions and Responsibilities
3.1. Functions
– Organize and carry out the training and education tasks in the field of Epidemiology, scientific research methods, and related disciplines for undergraduate and postgraduate students. Provide knowledge, practical skills, and expertise in assessing characteristics, influencing factors, disease prevention measures, epidemiology, and biological warfare prevention for the military personnel during peacetime, wartime, and combat.
– Organize and execute scientific research tasks in the fields of Epidemiology, military epidemiology, and military medicine. Study factors affecting health and methods to protect and prevent diseases and epidemics for the military personnel during peacetime, wartime, and combat.
– Operate under the leadership and direction of the Party Committee and the Board of Directors of the University and follow the professional guidance of relevant authorities. Command and manage the staff in accordance with military and University regulations.
3.2. Tasks and Responsibilities
a) Develop and approve curriculum and course content for undergraduate and postgraduate students within the scope of the training program, subject to the approval of the University ‘s Director. Compile lectures, textbooks, and teaching materials for the relevant student groups.
b) Coordinate with relevant authorities to develop and implement the assigned training plans.
c) Develop and implement a plan for teaching methods and faculty development within the department and disciplines. Strictly manage the team of officers, instructors, and staff, ensuring adherence to education and training regulations and guidelines.
d) Propose innovative methods for assessing and organizing exams, credit assessments, course completion, and graduation under the responsibility of the department and disciplines. Participate in evaluating and classifying the quality of learners as stipulated.
đ) Propose research directions in line with the department’s, the University ‘s, and the military’s situation and tasks. Organize the implementation of scientific and technological research activities.
e) Organize the assessment of the results of training plans, scientific research, and tasks assigned to instructors.
f) Efficiently manage and utilize the teaching facilities, equipment, and scientific research resources of the department and disciplines.
g) Perform other tasks related to teaching and scientific research as assigned.
h) Establish a strong and clean Party cell, create a comprehensive, exemplary unit, and be ready to accept and perform all assigned tasks.

5. Outstanding Achievements
– Commendations from the Ministry of National Defense: Three times awarded the Certificate of Commendation from the Minister of National Defense in the years 2011 (Decision No. 3505/QD-BQP dated September 29, 2011), 2017 (Decision No. 1650QD-BQP dated May 16, 2017), and 2022 (Decision No. 1356/QD-BQP dated April 24, 2022).
– Two individuals, Vu Xuan Te and Nguyen Thi Thanh Hong, were awarded the Certificate of Commendation from the Ministry of National Defense for their contributions to the COVID-19 pandemic prevention and control efforts in Decision No. 2765/QD-BQP dated August 20, 2021, and Decision No. 3862/QD-BQP dated November 5, 2021.
