2. Tradition of the unit:
In 1968, the foreign language lecturer group was established, belonging to the basic science block. The first lecturers of the Department include comrades: Tang Tu Ky, Le Thi Thu Que and Le Thanh The (public-employee lecturer, affiliated with the library).
On June 10, 1974, the Department of Foreign Languages was established with 8 lecturers, divided into two groups: Russian group and English group. In the years 1975, 1976, 1977, the Department added lecturers in English, German, Hungarian, French, Spanish, Cambodian and Vietnamese. There were times when the number of lecturers in the Department reached nearly 40 people.
Due to the mission situation, since 1980, the Department of Foreign Languages only had Russian, English, French, and Latin lecturers left, and divided into 3 groups: Russian group, English group, French-Vietnamese-Latin group. The department is assigned the task of teaching long-term students, in-service students, level I specialty, level II specialty, part-time officials and lecturers of the Academy and students from Laos, Cambodia and Cuba. In the 90s, due to mission requirements, a number of Russian lecturers were sent to study to become English lecturers and they completed their assigned tasks very well.
During the period 1974-2017, the Department of Foreign Languages has gone through many generations of leaders including:
+ Colonel Nguyen Ngoc Dieu: Head of the Department (1974-1984), Head of the Department (1984-1992), also the first Head of the Department of Foreign Languages.
+ Colonel Pham Van Hop: Deputy Head of the Department (1982-1988).
+ Colonel Vo Tan Tho: Deputy Head of the Department (1989-1992), Head of the Department (1992-1997)
+ Senior Lieutenant colonel Hoang Tien Hien: Deputy Head of the Department (1993-1995)
+ Colonel Nguyen Sinh Ky: Deputy Head of the Department (1996-1998), Head of the Department (1998-2008)
+ Colonel and Master Nguyen Thi Hong Thuy: Deputy Head of the Department (1998-2008), Head of the Department (2008-2017)
+ Senior Lieutenant colonel Nguyen Thi Yen: Deputy Head of the Department (2008-2015)
December 22, 2017, implementing Official Dispatch No. 376/VP-QL and to implement Decision 1441/QD-TM dated September 26, 2017 of the Chief of the General Staff on promulgating the Staffing Schedule of the Military Medical University; Official Dispatch No. 3449/HVQY-VP, the unit has changed its name from “BO MON NGOAI NGU” to “KHOA NGOAI NGU”. However, the unit’s functions and tasks do not change. At this time, department leaders include:
+ Colonel, PhD. Nguyen Thi Tuyet Mai: Vice Dean (2015-2017), in charge of Dean (2017-2019), Dean (2019 – present)
+ Lieutenant Colonel, PhD. Tran Huy Sang: Vice Dean (2017 – present).
Currently, the Department of Foreign Languages has 21 members (20 lecturers and 01 employee). The Department’s staff is increasingly improving in both quality and quantity with 05 Doctors of Philosophy, 12 masters, 03 bachelors. Most English lecturers have been sent for training or participated in courses abroad such as Australia, America, Singapore… to improve their qualifications and teaching methods.

The Party cell of Faculty of Foreign Languages includes 20 members, of which 01 comrade is a VMMU Party Committee party member. The Faculty of Foreign Languages Party cell is under the direct supervision and management of VMMU Party Committee. The party cell has been regarded as “Honest, Strong” for many years.
3. Functions and duties:
3.1. Functions:
Carrying out teaching and scientific research on linguistics and related majors; is under the direct supervision and management of VMMU Party Committee and Board of Directors as well as the professional guidance of authorities. Command and manage officers and employees under authority according to regulations of the Army and the University.
3.2. Duties:
a) Developing training curricula for subjects in training majors, submitting them to the Director for approval; compiling lectures, textbooks, and teaching materials within the scope of responsibility.
b) Coordinating with competent agencies to develop training plans and implement assigned training plans.
c) Developing and implementing methodological plans and training for lecturers and staff in faculties; strictly managing the staff, lecturers, and personnel and asking them to strictly comply with regulations on education and training.
d) Proposing to innovate evaluation methods and organize exams, credit checks, modules, subjects, and graduations in charge of faculties and departments; Participating in evaluating and classifying learners’ quality according to regulations.
d) Proposing research directions and carrying out scientific and technological activities.
e) Organizing examination and evaluation of the results of implementation of training plans, scientific research and assigned tasks of lecturers.
f) Managing and using facilities, teaching and scientific research equipment of faculty effectively.
g) Doing other tasks related to teaching and scientific research when being assigned (contests, competitions, Olympiad contests, seminars, etc.)…
h) Building clean, strong cells and comprehensively strong unit that is “exemplary and typical”; being ready to accept and complete all assigned tasks well.

5. Achievements
– Having been awarded the title “Victory Determination Unit” twice.
– Having been conferred 02 Certificate of Merit Awards from the Minister of Ministry of Defense, 04 Certificates of Merit at the General staff – level and many certificates of merit from VMMU for excellently completing tasks;
– Having 02 General staff-level scientific projects that won high awards.
– Instructing the VMMU English team to participate in the National English Olympiad for non-major students and the English Olympiad for cadets of higher military educational institutions with high results:

+ In 2017: The first prize for the outstanding candidate (Talent), The first prize for the outstanding candidate (Debate) and the third prize for the whole team;
+ In 2018: The grand prize (The highest prize) in the National English Olympiad for non-major students;
