2. Unit Tradition
Burn injuries are common in both peacetime and wartime. In history, burn injuries have existed from very early on and have continued to coexist with the development of human society, becoming more frequent and complex due to the emergence of new burn-causing agents and mechanisms. Especially in recent times, with the development of various industries, the risks of explosion and mass burns have increased, ranking second in mass casualty incidents. Burn treatment has made significant progress, saving many severely burned patients. Training and research on burns have become a specialized field closely related to many other disciplines such as pathophysiology, emergency medicine, immunology, reconstructive surgery, and nutrition.
During the resistance war against the United States to save the country, in response to the demand for burn treatment for wounded soldiers and patients sent from battlefields, especially since the American imperialists escalated their attacks in the North, the Burn Department of Military Hospital 103 was established on December 1, 1964, separated from the Field Surgery Department, under the leadership of Dr. Lê Thế Trung. At that time, the staff consisted of 18 members, including 3 doctors, 2 medics, 9 nurses, and 4 administrative personnel. The Burn Department’s mission was to treat, train, and conduct scientific research on burns, particularly war-related burns.
On April 25, 1991, due to practical necessity, there was an urgent need for a leading institution nationwide to direct, guide, and develop the burn specialty and implement the combination of military and civilian medicine. The Prime Minister (now the Prime Minister of the Government) issued Decision No. 142/CT to establish the National Burn Institute named after the renowned physician Lê Hữu Trác, commonly referred to as Lê Hữu Trác Burn Institute, based on the Burn Department of Military Hospital 103.
On July 3, 2019, to align with the overall development of the healthcare sector in the current period and the coming years and comply with the provisions of the Law on Medical Examination and Treatment regarding the organizational forms of medical facilities, with the authorization of the Prime Minister, the Minister of National Defense issued Decision No. 2768/QD-BQP to rename the Lê Hữu Trác National Burn Institute to Lê Hữu Trác National Burn Hospital under the Vietnam Military Medical University.
3. Functions and Tasks
Lê Hữu Trác National Burn Hospital is under the management and direction of the Ministry of Defense, directly affiliated with the Vietnam Military Medical University. Additionally, it operates under the professional and technical guidance of the Ministry of Health, concerning scientific research, international cooperation, and treatment plans for civilian patients. It serves as the leading burn hospital in the entire country and is entrusted with the following tasks:
– Researching methods for burn prevention and initial treatment at the grassroots level.
– Monitoring and providing guidance on burn specialty knowledge and techniques nationwide.
– Examining and treating burns for both civilians and military personnel, as well as handling burn-related complications referred by lower-level hospitals.
– Collaborating with medical universities to train and further educate burn specialty personnel.
– Engaging in scientific cooperation in the field of burn specialties with domestic and international hospitals, research institutes, and global healthcare organizations under the guidance of the Ministry of Health.
