Military Science Department

2. Mission and Responsibilities:
The department is responsible for organizing, implementing, and managing research projects. Over 45 years of development and growth through the ups and downs of history, the Scientific Research Department (now the Department of Science, Technology, and Environment) has achieved many accomplishments to be proud of. Specifically, the department has organized and executed 19 state-level projects, 267 ministry-level projects, and 112 unit-level projects.
Scientific research activities are conducted in various fields, with some notable highlights, including:
Organ Transplants:
– Kidney Transplants: In 1992, the first successful kidney transplant in Vietnam was performed at VMMU. Since then, hundreds of patients nationwide have been saved through kidney transplant techniques. Following the success in kidney transplants, from 1997 to 2003, the Ministry of Health assigned the school as the leading unit for organ transplant projects. The organ transplant complex at the VMMU was awarded the Ho Chi Minh Prize for Science and Technology in 2005.
– Liver Transplants: The Department of Science, Technology, and Environment has gathered leading professors, military doctors, foreign experts, and successfully organized the first human liver transplant in Vietnam on January 31, 2004. This achievement led to the transfer of the transplant technique to other medical facilities.
– Heart Transplants: VMMU successfully performed the first heart transplant in Vietnam from a brain-dead donor on June 17, 2010. Interestingly, the most challenging aspect of this heart transplant was not the technical procedure itself but the coordination with the family to receive the heart donation from a brain-dead relative.
Biotechnology:
VMMU has been implementing research on the application of cells and stem cells in disease treatment. Specifically:
– Successful research has been conducted on the cultivation of fibroblast cells and keratinocyte cells for the treatment of wounds and burns.
– Initial research has been carried out on the cultivation and differentiation of stem cells to serve in the treatment of male infertility due to a lack of sperm.
– Collaboration with the Military Central Hospital 108 has been initiated to study the application of autologous hematopoietic stem cells to treat difficult-to-heal injuries in muscles, bones, and joints.
– Collaboration with MEKOPHAR Company has been undertaken to research the isolation of stem cells from umbilical cord tissue.

– Developing a scheme to coordinate with Mamprotech, Australia to build stem cell banks in Northern Vietnam. The partner visited and worked with VMMU and agreed to implement the cooperation project.
– Currently, VMMU is completing the infrastructure for the construction of stem cell banks.
– Research and application of embryo technology: have researched and applied technical processes and successfully implemented in vitro fertilization, development of filtration techniques, washing and preserving sperm. VMMU is the third institute nationwide to successfully implement in vitro fertilization techniques. Up to now, the embryo technology center has supported the birth of nearly a thousand babies with in vitro fertilization and reproduction support, bringing happiness to many families.
– Initial success in researching the production process of some biological products for diagnosis and treatment. Typically, the application of PCR techniques for diagnosis, research and manufacture of vaccines to prevent respiratory infections, Pseudomonas aeruginosa serum, Snake antivenom serum.
– Focus on researching genetic and DNA techniques to diagnose prenatal defects, individual identification of blood and forensic examination.
– Building a strain bank, genetic bank of pathogens, currently there are 300 strains of pathogens in the bank.
– Successful application of plant stem cell technology, culturing Ngoc Linh ginseng biomass, creating a source of raw materials to produce a number of preparations for life. This is the first advanced technology to be successfully implemented in Vietnam. Initially culturing biomass of Vietnam Red Pine stem cells, Vu Diep ginseng.
Inheritance and development of traditional medicine:
– Researching the procedure of surgical anesthesia by acupuncture. The cases applied this procedure quickly recovered without any complications caused by anesthetic.
– Research on preparation of many domestic pharmaceutical products such as B76, Maduxin, Phylamin, CM2… Many products have been widely circulated in the market. In which, Phylamine, Rotundin Sulphat products have been provided with an exclusive patent, received the first prize in VIFOTEC Technical Innovation Award.
Over the past years, the researches and projects have been completed on schedule and achieved good results. Many results of topics and projects have been applied to treatment, education – training and socio-economic development. Many studies have been published in domestic and foreign journals.
3. Organizing scientific research activities associated with training tasks:
Many projects focus on renovating training activities, forms and measures to activate teaching activities, self -training, forms of teaching facilities, Innovating university teaching methods. … The Department has researched and developed multiple -choice software to serve examination. In 2008, at the information technology application exhibition for training, the software was highly appreciated by the Ministry of Defence and could be applied in military schools.
Many scientific and technological products have been applied in training such as the set of CD for clinical surgical procedures, simulation technology in teaching, ebook software for circulatory anatomy, ebooks of the head-face-neck anatomy; TV technology in teaching and learning medicine, solutions to combine ethics education through teaching specialized medical subjects.
Every year, cadres and lecturers at VMMU published hundreds of articles and research works on domestic and international journals..
4. Organizing scientific research activities of students:
VMMU is one of the universities with the most exciting youth science and technology activities throughout the country.
In the past 10 years, Department of Science, Technology& Environment has guided and organized over 400 scientific researches implemented by young cadres and students to report at Youth Science and Technology Conferences and Scientific Student Conferences. There have been 32 researches with First Prize after 5 times attending National Youth Science Conference of Medicine and Pharmacy.
In 2002, there were 02 researches winning the first prize of the VIFOTEC Award, 01 Award of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) of the United Nations. This is the only award given by WIPO to university students in the country in 2002. VMMU’s students have had the first prize in the award of Scientific Research Student Award and VIFOTEC many years.
VMMU is considered to be the most powerful scientific research activity for students in the education and training industry and awarded by the Ministry of Education and Training for 13 successive years.
5. Scientific research activities associated with treatment and social demands:
Scientific research for treatment:
Scientific works managed by Department of Science, Technology and Environment are always associated with the diagnosis and treatment. Those works include the application of acupuncture in surgery, endoscopy in diagnosis and treatment, vascular intervention, treatment of cancer and other deadliest diseases, rehabilitation for wounded soldiers … These works have contributed to detecting and saving many patients.
Scientific research for diplomatic struggle:
Department of Science, Technology and Environment at VMMU is assigned by Prime Minister, Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Health to carry the collection of scientific and legal evidences about the consequences of Agent Orange/dioxin to human health to participate in diplomatic struggle. From 2002 to 2004, the research team collected over 60% of the records compared to the total number of records nationwide to serve diplomatic struggle.
Scientific research for social demands:
Although the cost of scientific career is not big, VMMU always determines the research must be associated with the real training and combat of the unit and social needs.
Many programs and projects managed by the department have contributed to protecting and improving the health of soldiers such as the Military Medical Development Program, researching measures to improve the ability to adapt to the soldiers in all different working environments, preventing occupational diseases…
Scientific and technological products such as pharmaceuticals, pig skin, homogenous grafts … are also applied by many health facilities throughout the country.
The process of building and developing Department of Science Technology and Environment was awarded a third -class Victory Medal by the State (1983); The Third -class National Protection Medal by the President (6/2006); Certificate of Merit from the Prime Minister (1982, 2003); Ministry of Science Technology and Environment awarded the flag in 2002; Ministry of Defense awarded certificates of merit about the achievement in Science Technology and Environment (1996, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2005); certificate of Merit by Ministry of Education and Training (2003, 2005); certificate of Merit by HOCHIMINH Central Communist Youth Union (2003); certificate of Merit by VMMU, and the winning unit during 6 years (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005).
