Enhancing the qualities of Uncle Ho’s soldiers: Taking care of foreign language staff and lecturers

As a core force that plays a direct decisive role in the quality of education and training, in recent times, the Party Committee and commanders of the Faculty of Foreign Languages at the Vietnam Military Medical University have implemented effective strategies to build, enhance qualifications, and gradually standardize their personnel.

Discussing the Faculty’s teaching staff, Colonel Nguyen Thi Tuyet Mai, Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, stated: “To meet the requirements of foreign language teaching, the Party Committee and commanders have consistently focused on developing training plans to enhance quality and standardize our teaching staff.”

Currently, the Faculty boasts 6 out of 20 lecturers with doctoral degrees and 11 with master’s degrees. Among the 15 English lecturers, 10 have achieved a C1 level in the European framework (equivalent to an IELTS score of 7.0-8.0). Notably, Major Nguyen Thi Thu Hien stands out as an exemplary young lecturer and researcher. She has led one scientific study, contributed to four university-level projects, and participated in a Ministry of National Defense-level project. Additionally, Major Hien has coached the University’s English Olympic team, leading them to high achievements in national and military Olympiad competitions. Ms. Hien won the title of Excellent Lecturer at the Ministry of National Defense level in 2019, and the title of Competitive Soldier at the military level in 2020.

These accomplishments are the result of various initiatives, primarily leveraging the intrinsic strengths of each faculty member. The Faculty of Foreign Languages has also prioritized encouraging staff participation in the Good Lecturer Contest organized by the University. Participants have demonstrated their commitment and determination to excel. In the 2022-2023 academic year, two lecturers from the Faculty participated in the contest and were recognized as Excellent Lecturers at the University level. The Faculty places significant emphasis on mentoring and providing feedback, particularly for young lecturers. Many faculty members are actively engaged in scientific research, with their work being published in esteemed domestic and international journals.

To further improve skills and teaching methods, the Faculty’s committee and command focus on nurturing the next generation by facilitating opportunities for young lecturers to attend short-term training courses and seminars both domestically and internationally. Approximately 75% of the Faculty’s lecturers have completed short-term teaching methodology courses in countries such as the United States, Australia, and Singapore.

Looking ahead, the Faculty aims to standardize its teaching staff, with a goal that by 2030, 100% of English lecturers will achieve a C1 level or higher on the IELTS exam. Colonel Nguyen Thi Tuyet Mai emphasized that to reach this goal, the Faculty will continue to regularly assess the foreign language proficiency of specialized lecturers and send them to participate in courses and seminars, both domestically and internationally, to enhance their qualifications, engage in scientific research, share experiences, and further develop their capabilities.
