Faculty of Foreign Languages, Vietnam Military Medical University: Celebrating 50 Years of Development and Growth
Throughout the past 50 years, alongside the developmental phases of the Vietnam Military Medical University, the Faculty of Foreign Languages has consistently fulfilled all assigned tasks, actively contributing to the tradition of the unit being honored three times as a Hero of the People’s Armed Forces.

On June 7th in Hanoi, the Faculty of Foreign Languages at the Vietnam Military Medical University held a ceremony to commemorate its 50th Anniversary (June 10, 1974 – June 10, 2024) and to receive a Certificate of Commendation from the Minister of National Defence. . Lieutenant General, Associate Professor, Ph.D. Nguyen Xuan Kien, Director of the Vietnam Military Medical University, attended and delivered a congratulatory speech.
At the ceremony, Senior Colonel Dr. Nguyen Thi Tuyet Mai, Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, reviewed the glorious 50-year tradition of building, developing, and maturing of the faculty; she noted that the inception of the Department of Foreign Languages (the precursor to the Faculty of Foreign Languages) in the early 1970s, during the fierce period of the resistance against American imperialist invasion, reflected the military’s far-sighted vision on the role of foreign languages and the importance of international cooperation and global integration. With a mission of training and scientific research, the Faculty of Foreign Languages has always fulfilled the trust of the Party Committee and the Board of Directors of the Vietnam Military Medical University. The faculty’s lecturers are fundamentally trained at academies and schools both domestically and abroad, with the majority of foreign language instructors receiving specialized and methodological training overseas, such as in Russia, Australia, the USA, Singapore, and China. Currently, 100% of the faculty’s lecturers hold university degrees, of which nearly 90% have postgraduate degrees; 6 out of 20 members (30%) hold PhDs; 10 members have been recognized by the Ministry of National Defence with the title of Main Lecturer, and many have been recognized as Excellent Lecturers at the university level; with numerous dedicated and practical scientific research projects aimed at improving foreign language teaching methods, along with reputable national and international publications, clearly demonstrating their passion for the profession and relentless efforts in their specialized activities across generations of instructors.
Throughout the past 50 years, along with the developmental phases of the Vietnam Military Medical University, the Faculty of Foreign Languages has consistently completed all assigned tasks at each stage and made significant contributions to the tradition of the unit, which has been honored three times as a Hero of the People’s Armed Forces. The Faculty of Foreign Languages has achieved remarkable accomplishments and numerous prestigious awards such as: the Third-Class Labor Order for outstanding contributions to medical collaboration and expertise exchange between the Laos Military Medical Academy and the Vietnam Military Medical University; two Certificates of Commendation from the Minister of National Defence; five Certificates of Commendation from the General Staff; twice awarded the title “Determined to Win Unit”; and training the English Olympic team of the Vietnam Military Medical University for national and international competitions, consistently achieving excellent results …

In 2023, Captain Nguyen Phuong Linh, an English lecturer from the Faculty, was selected to join the peacekeeping forces in Central Africa as a communications officer. This not only brings pride but also serves as a testament to the Faculty of Foreign Languages’ focus on training officers with proficient foreign language skills, meeting the increasing demands of defense work in new circumstances. This readiness to accept and excellently complete tasks assigned by the Party and the State contributes to the overall development of the Vietnam Military Medical University and the Vietnam’s People Army.
During the congratulatory speech at the anniversary ceremony, on behalf of the Party Committee and the Board of Directors of the Vietnam Military Medical University, Lt. Gen., Assoc. Prof., Ph.D. Nguyen Xuan Kien, Director of the Vietnam Military Medical University, acknowledged and praised the achievements of the Faculty of Foreign Languages over the past 50 years. The Director also requested that the Faculty of Foreign Languages consistently implement the resolutions of the party committees seriously, effectively, and efficiently, focusing on the resolutions of the 22nd Party Congress of the University and the resolution of the Faculty’s Party Committee for the term 2020-2025. This includes a thorough application of resolutions related to foreign language education and training; continuing to innovate the content and methods of teaching, proactively updating and supplementing the training program towards standardization and modernization to meet the needs of various groups, aiming to make foreign language learning a widespread movement and a personal requirement for each staff, lecturer, and student at the University. Actively and proactively engage in scientific research, focusing on enhancing basic research and prioritizing research projects that directly serve the teaching activities of the Faculty and the education and training of the University; maintaining good relations with external educational institutions for the exchange of content, programs, teaching methods, and scientific research. Regularly foster unity and consensus in leadership, command, and throughout the unit; build a truly unified collective of the Faculty in will and action in task implementation; build a clean and strong party organization, exemplary, and comprehensively strong unit, serving as a “Model and Exemplary” unit.
At the anniversary ceremony, authorized by the Minister of National Defence, Lt. Gen., Assoc. Prof., Ph.D. Nguyen Xuan Kien, Director of the Vietnam Military Medical University, presented the Faculty of Foreign Languages with a Certificate of Commendation from the Minister of National Defence. This award was in recognition of the Faculty’s outstanding performance from 2022 to 2023, contributing significantly to the development of the military, strengthening national defense, and protecting the homeland.
