Research Policy
Over 58 years of construction and maturity with the ups and downs of history, the Military Science Department has achieved many proud achievements: giving professional advice to the Party Committee and the Directorates of VMMU to implement 19 state -level projects, more than 50 state -level researches, more than 200 ministerial researches and thousands of researches of VMMU. Scientific research activities of VMMU are conducted in many different fields, in which, there are some typically spearheads as the followings:
Organ transplantation:
– VMMU is a major organ transplant center all over the country and the army. It has performed the first kidney transplant in Vietnam (1992), so far, kidney transplant has become a regular technique at Military Hospital 103/VMMU. The group of researches of organ transplant conducted by VMMU was awarded Ho Chi Minh Award for Science and Technology in 2005.
– According to the success of the first kidney transplant in Vietnam, Department of Military Science advised the Party Committee and the Directorates of VMMU to gather both civilian and military leading professors and doctors as well as foreign experts to successfully implement the first liver transplant (2004) and heart transplant in human body (2010) in Vietnam. With the above achievement, VMMU was awarded Ho Chi Minh Award for Science and Technology.
– Following the success of organ transplant, on 21/02/2017, VMMU coordinated with Japanese experts to successfully perform the first lung transplantation from living donor in Vietnam. The success of the lung transplant reaffirms the pioneering role in the field of organ transplantation of Military Hospital 103/ VMMU for domestic medical field and bringing hope to patients who need lung transplantation.
Biotechnology
Biotechnology is a high -tech field based on science of life with a combination of research procedure and technical equipment to create technological scale to exploit living activities of microorganisms, plant and animal cells. In recent years, Department of Military Science has advised the Party Committee and the Directorates of VMMU to conduct applied research in the field of biotechnology, for example:
– Stem cell application in treatment
+ Having been successfully researching the procedure of culturing fibroblast and horn cells to treat burns.
+ Initially researching the culture and differentiation of sperm cells for treatment of male infertility caused by having no sperm
+ Coordinating with the Central Military Hospital 108 to research the application of hematopoietic stem cells to treat muscle, bones and joint injuries; coordinating with Mekophar Company to research stem cell isolation from the umbilical cord membrane; coordinating with Mamprotech, Australia to build Stem Cell Bank in the north of Vietnam. The partners visited and worked with VMMU and agreed to implement the cooperation projects.
+ Currently, VMMU is completing the infrastructure for the construction of Stem Cell Bank.
– Doing research to apply embryo technology: studied the application of technical procedure and successfully performed the in-vitro fertilization, developed techniques of sperm filtration, washing and preservation. VMMU is the third institution in Vietnam to successfully implement in-vitro fertilization techniques. Up to now, Military Institute of Clinical Embryology and Histology has successfully performed more than one thousand cases of in-vitro fertilization and reproduction support, bringing happiness to many families.
– Initial success in researching the production process of some biological products for diagnosis and treatment, typically the application of PCR technique for diagnostic research. Researching and producing vaccines to prevent respiratory infections, anti-pseudomonas serum, anti-venom serum.
– Focusing on researching genetic and ADN techniques for prenatal defect diagnosis, individual identification to identify blood-relationship, and forensic examination. Building bank of strains and pathogen genes. Currently, there are 300 strains in the bank.
– Successfully applying technology of plant stem cell, culturing biomass of NgocLinh ginseng to create the material sources for some products for life. This is the first advanced technology successfully implemented in Vietnam. Initially culturing biomass of Vietnamese red pine stem cells, Vu Diep ginseng.
– Collaborating with Nanogen Pharmaceutical Biotechnology Joint Stock Company to test Covid-19 vaccine.
Inheritance and development of traditional medicine:
– Safely studied and used acupuncture anesthesia for more than 10,000 surgeries. The patients who were operated by using acupuncture anesthesia were quick recovered without side effects as using anaesthetic.
– Studied and produced many medicines from domestic sources of materials such as B76, Maduxin, Phylamin, CM2… Many products have been widely in circulation. Especially the product Phylamin, Rotundin Sulphat was given Exclusive Patent License and awarded the first prize of VIFOTEC.
The researches and projects being in charge by VMMU were completed in time with good results. Many results were applied in treatment, education-training, and socio-economic development. Many researches were published on domestic and foreign journals.
Organizing scientific research activities connected closely with training tasks:
Many researches focused on innovating training activities, formats and methods using teaching tools, renovating teaching methodologies at university level… The department has been building the software of multiple choice test for exams. In 2008, the software was highly assessed by Ministry of Defence in the Information Technology Exhibition for training and training. It can be used in the military schools.
Many scientific and technological products are used in training such as the series of CDs of clinical surgical procedures, simulation technology in teaching in some departments, ebooks of circulatory system anatomy and head-face-neck anatomy, television technology in medical teaching and learning, solutions to teach medical ethics via teaching subjects for medical purposes.
Every year, VMMU staffs have hundreds of articles and scientific works published on domestic and foreign journals for special purposes.
