Encouraging and motivating young researchers to engage in scientific research (SR), innovation, technical improvement, and practical application, while simultaneously identifying, training, and nurturing young talents, is a goal that the SR movement at Vietnam Military Medical University (VMMU) has set.

Through effective practices, the SR movement has contributed to enhancing the treatment capabilities and fulfilling the central political tasks of VMMU.

Participating in the 23rd Army Creative Youth Awards (ACYA) in 2023, VMMU won 1 topic and 6 initiatives. Major, PhD, Doctor Nguyen Doan Tien Linh (the project leader) and the author team from the Center for Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery (Le Huu Trac National Burn Hospital, VMMU) were honored to receive the third prize of this award. Major Nguyen Doan Tien Linh shared that the most successful aspect of the project “Technique of Using the Pedicled Flap of Branches Through the Axillary Artery to Treat Scar Contraction in the Axillary Region due to Burn Sequelae” was the initiative of him and the author team being applied in the practical treatment of patients at the Hospital.

According to evaluations: The pedicled flap of branches through the axillary artery is flexibly designed to treat scar contraction sequelae in the axillary region at moderate and severe levels with many advantages. The technique has been clinically applied to patients with sequelae scars after burns at the Center for Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery. The obtained results have met well both functional and aesthetic requirements.

According to statistics, from 2018 to 2023, VMMU has had 50 projects, initiatives from 50 author teams participating in the ACYA and winning many high awards. The highlight is the meticulous and serious research of many projects. Many projects have high scientific quality, applying new and modern scientific and technological achievements in the world for research, such as: Digital technology, biotechnology, new material technology to enhance the effectiveness of defense work. Through SR activities, young talents of VMMU are able to unleash their intelligence, creative capacity, and ability to access and master science and technology.

According to Colonel Doan Van Mau, Deputy Head of the Political Department of VMMU, these results stem from the leadership’s attention, guidance, and promotion of SR activities linked to education and training of the Party Committee, the Board of Directors of VMMU, and the leadership and command of units and agencies over the past years. Promoting the potential of young officers, lecturers, trainees, party committees, commands at all levels within the Academy, boosting propaganda, education, and raising awareness about the position and significance of the SR movement.

The Academy identifies the orientation, leadership measures, appropriate guidance, closely related to the unit’s reality from proposal, research deployment, progress management, quality evaluation of topics. At the same time, many effective measures and forms are taken to create funding sources, material facilities to serve research topics, initiatives; timely drawing experiences, encouraging and rewarding officers, lecturers, trainees who actively participate and achieve high results in SR. As a result, the research projects, initiatives, and fields of research of units and agencies have focused on improving both the quantity and quality of research. These results have practically contributed to improving the quality of training and treatment of Vietnam Military Medical University.
