On the morning of December 28, in Hanoi, Vietnamese, Laotian, and Cambodian undergraduate cadets at the Vietnam Military Medical University enthusiastically competed in the 2024 Medical Skills Competition. The event aimed to enhance the quality of clinical training, deepen knowledge and understanding of procedures, and improve clinical examination skills for future practice.
Lieutenant General, Prof. Dr. Tran Viet Tien, Director of the Vietnam Military Medical University, stated that this marks the 16th year the University has organized the Medical Skills Competition for undergraduate cadets. Drawing from practical clinical training experiences and lessons learned from organizing clinical examination skills competitions since 2009, the University has continued to innovate in content and format over the years.

| The competition consists of two rounds: communication skills, patient interviewing, and examination; and laboratory analysis skills. |
During the competition, groups randomly drew sets of questions and scenarios prepared by different departments and practiced on simulated patients. The judging panel, appointed by the University’s Board of Directors, evaluated the performances.
“The competition is held at the branch, system, and university levels. This year, 21 teams from various branches and classes, comprising nearly 100 cadets, participated at the branch level. From there, six outstanding teams were selected to compete at the university level,” shared Lieutenant General Tran Viet Tien.
According to the Director, the quality of clinical training at the University has shown relatively good results. Most cadets have mastered examination techniques, can describe symptoms for disease diagnosis, and, upon graduation, apply their knowledge effectively in patient examination and treatment. Their performance has been highly regarded by medical facilities both within and outside the military.

| The six teams participating in the University-level competition represent two training systems: the domestic cadet training system and the international cadet training system. |
However, the Director noted some limitations in the clinical training quality. Some cadets still struggle with mastering examination techniques, understanding, and interpreting the significance of symptoms for disease diagnosis.
Thus, the competition aims to help cadets improve the quality of their clinical studies, deepen their knowledge and mastery of clinical examination procedures and skills, and establish a stronger foundation before becoming physicians serving the military and the people.
“The competition is a meaningful and practical activity. It helps cadets enhance their proficiency, rehearse skills to detect and evaluate the significance of symptoms in diagnoses, and ultimately devise better treatment measures,” affirmed Lieutenant General Tran Viet Tien.
