Building a Specialized Burns Hospital and Developing Key Medical Specialties
Upholding the tradition of a unit twice honored as Hero of the People’s Armed Forces, the Le Huu Trac National Burns Hospital (Vietnam Military Medical University) maintained its spirit of unity, proactivity, and creativity during the 2020–2025 period. This allowed the hospital to successfully carry out the Emulation Movement for Determined Victory. Expanded in both scope and depth, the movement has truly become a strong driving force, enabling the hospital to successfully fulfill all assigned tasks.
As military medical officers, the entire staff and medical personnel of Le Huu Trac National Burns Hospital have upheld a high sense of responsibility. They have taken the lead in providing emergency aid for mass burn casualties from fire and explosion disasters, effectively managing chronic wounds, and performing reconstructive and aesthetic surgeries.
Driven by the principle of evaluating success based on treatment effectiveness, the hospital has prioritized emergency care and patient treatment. This focus has contributed significantly to higher survival rates and improved quality of life, thus helping patients reintegrate into the community more effectively. Specifically, during the 2020–2025 period, the hospital promptly and successfully treated 85 mass burn incidents, with many cases achieving a 100% patient survival rate. Furthermore, the hospital has applied numerous new and advanced techniques in the fields of burn treatment, plastic surgery, wound healing, and functional rehabilitation.
Le Huu Trac National Burns Hospital organized the 15th National Scientific Conference on Burns, Wound Healing, and Plastic–Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery.
Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Nguyen Thi Bich Phuong, Head of the Department of Chronic Wound Treatment at the Wound Healing Center, said: “In treatment, the combination of modern medicine and traditional medicine has been implemented effectively, often utilizing modernized, research-based products. These include: fat-derived stem cell sheet grafting techniques using autologous adipose tissue in chronic wound care; platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy for chronic wounds; combined platelet-rich plasma and autologous fat-derived stem cell therapy in treating chronic wounds and ulcers; and hydrotherapy for limbs, among others.”
In recent years, the hospital has prioritized the development of tissue preservation, tissue engineering, and cell culture technologies. Notably, it has successfully produced and preserved temporary skin substitutes, including porcine dermis and frog skin. It has also developed cultured products such as allogeneic dermal fibroblast sheets, autologous keratinocyte sheets and suspensions, and stem cell-based products derived from umbilical membranes, adipose tissue, and platelet-rich plasma (PRP). The Wound Healing Center has successfully implemented many advanced techniques in tissue and cell technology. Concurrently, the Center for Plastic, Aesthetic, and Reconstructive Surgery has implemented and refined numerous cutting-edge techniques such as microsurgery, super-microsurgery, surface radiotherapy, laser treatment, and scar contracture correction after burns, as well as the treatment of congenital deformities and the sequelae of various other diseases.
Major General Prof. Dr. Nguyen Nhu Lam, Director of Le Huu Trac National Burns Hospital, stated: “Upholding our core values of Expertise – Friendliness – Cooperation, the Party Committee and the hospital’s Board of Directors have introduced strategies and initiatives aimed at building a strong and comprehensively developed hospital, both organizationally and professionally, while also gradually modernizing our infrastructure. Beyond our specialization in burns, the hospital is also focused on developing key disciplines such as plastic, aesthetic, and reconstructive surgery, and wound healing.”

These postgraduate programs include Master’s degrees, Resident Doctor training, Doctoral research, and Specialty Levels I and II. The hospital has particularly emphasized self-training and continuous professional development to enhance staff expertise and update knowledge. Scientific research has yielded practical and highly effective results, helping to shorten hospital stays, reduce mortality rates, lower costs, and improve patients’ quality of life. These advancements bring substantial benefits to various medical specialties, thereby contributing significantly to the overall achievements of the national healthcare system.
The practical implementation of the Emulation Movement for Determined Victory has resulted in the emergence of many exemplary collectives and individuals across various work areas. During the 2020–2025 period, the hospital received numerous prestigious awards, including: 1 First-Class Labor Order and 1 Third-Class Labor Order, 2 Government Emulation Flags, 2 Certificates of Merit from the Prime Minister, and 2 Emulation Flags from the Ministry of National Defense. Additionally, hundreds of collectives and individuals have received various other commendations and honors.
